4 Qualities to Consider Before Hiring a Business Mentor

If there's one thing entrepreneurs are always on the lookout for, it's opportunities for growth.

We all want to crush our goals and build the best business possible, but figuring out what strategies to implement to actually reach those goals can be overwhelming.

If you’re trying to make all the big decisions for your business on your own and feel overwhelmed, partnering with a mentor who’s already tackled the challenges you’re currently facing can be a game changer.

It my be time to connect with a coach or mentor if:

  • You Feel Scared, Scattered and Stuck

Afraid your next move will be the wrong one? Sometimes you can be too close to a situation to see it for what it really is. If you’re struggling to move forward, find a mentor who’s able to grasp the big picture and break it down for you. An outside perspective may be all it takes to define small tasks that will lead to realizing your big dreams.

  • You're Tired of Flying Solo and Leaning on Google to Answer Your Questions.

Let your husband or partner off the hook! They don't have all the answers. Facebook groups don’t have all the answers, either. In fact, asking questions in free Facebook groups can result in bad advice and may cause you to spin your wheels even more!

We all need a safe space to dream, vent, and ask questions to others who are in the same boat as we are and truly understand the struggles we face. If you long for a sense of camaraderie, find a mentor or coach who offers the benefit of community as well. You'll feel inspired and motivated to keep on fighting the good fight.

  • You're Ready to Grow Faster

Your business isn't just a hobby. If you want to be successful, you need to make money. When you're ready to stop playing small and crack the code to making abundant income, a coach or mentor can be the catalyst! They will help you create and offer the most in-demand, lucrative products and services in your niche, develop the right mindset to charge what you’re worth, and sell your offers with confidence.

Sound familiar?

If so, it might be high time to invest in yourself and your biz by hiring a coach or mentor! But before you sign on the dotted line, make sure to do your homework by searching for these 4 Qualities to Consider Before Hiring a Business Mentor.

1) Proof

Look at your potential mentors' own business with a magnifying glass. Are they running a business that you hope to have one day? Do they make the revenue you hope to make?

When you hire a coach or mentor, you're paying to learn their shortcuts and strategies so you can run your business better. You want to make sure you like the way their business is run. In addition, ask yourself:

  • Do they truly practice what they preach?

  • Are you inspired by the way they handle challenges and setbacks in their business?

  • Are their values aligned with yours?

  • Are they at least 3 - 5 steps ahead of you?

2) Process

Another important qualification for a mentor or coach is the process they use. They should already have a proven system that is consistently getting results for their other clients. You want to make sure they have a system of steps laid out, so check out their website for their signature framework! Some things to consider:

  • Is this mentor's process, method or formula one that you can see yourself implementing into your own business?

  • Are their clients seeing quick benefits with these methods?

  • Can they provide compelling testimonials and case studies to show how clients have grown under their leadership?

The process or method they will use to take your business to the next level needs to be backed up by their expertise, proven through real-life examples, and grounded in solid knowledge of current industry trends.

3) Personality

A mentorship is a relationship, so their personality mattersScour their website, read their About Me page, and learn about them as a person. Check out their Instagram, watch their stories, and see if you respond to their communication style.

  • Does their personality seem compatible with your own?

  • Are you in sync with their energy?

  • Will you actually enjoy working with them?

You're going to be spending a lot of time learning from this person, so you want to make sure you vibe together!

4) Community

When looking for a mentor or coach, a component many people forget about is community. Yet this element to mentorship can be incredibly beneficial to your business!

I recommend hiring a coach or mentor who provides a community aspect to their coaching program, so you can connect with other clients going through the same mentorship process. This can be implemented in different ways, including Facebook groups, live zoom calls, or in-person retreats. Ask yourself:

  • Is belonging to a community part of the coaching package?

  • Is there a way to easily connect with this community?

  • Are there ways set up to communicate with this tribe to keep me accountable and inspired?

  • In addition, is your mentor opening up her own connections to make introductions?

  • Does she spotlight her coaching clients on her platforms?

Mentors and coaches can be found around every corner these days, and it can be hard to choose the right one. The above criteria and questions will help you narrow in on someone who addresses your specific needs, understands your business mission, and vibes with your brand.

Remember, it’s okay to be picky and shop around! After all, a mentor is a big investment and commitment, and you want to be sure you’re partnering with someone who can help create a path for you to achieve your dreams.
